Muncy Memorial Day parade ready to step off, ceremony to follow

The Muncy Memorial Day parade is all set for Monday, May 27, at 11 a.m.

The parade will form at 10 a.m. at Mechanic Street and the Basil Wood Fire Grill restaurant parking lot.

The parade is spearheaded by Roland Ritter American Legion Post 268 and Commander Sheila Hagemeyer along with Muncy Councilman Bill Scott, who is coordinating.

Immediately after the parade, ceremonies will follow at the Muncy Cemetery to honor the fallen who made the supreme sacrifice.

Scheduled to speak is Pastor Steve Smith of the Pleasant View Wesleyan Church, who will offer the invocation and benediction, Muncy Mayor Jon Ort, Lycoming County Commissioner Scott Metzger and keynote speaker Capt. Aaron Ohnmeiss. Also in attendance will be Edward Smith VFW Post 3428 Commander Bill Jones.

Muncy High School’s band will play the National Anthem and Taps. The band is directed by Mike Buck.

The Honor Guard, with a combo of Post 268 and Post 3428 members filling the roles, will render the 21 Gun Salute. After the parade participates are invited out to the American Legion Post 268 for some light refreshments.

The keynote speaker, Ohnmeiss, graduated from Muncy High School in 1994. He attended Kutztown University and graduated in 1999 with multiple degrees. He worked as a chemistry teacher in the Wellsboro School District for 10 years.

Ohnmeiss served in the Army National Guard for 15 years. Key positions he held were tank platoon leader, infantry platoon leader, tank company commander, combined arms battalion and heavy brigade combat team as assistant operations officer.

He is a graduate of multiple Army courses including the Scout Leaders Course and Ranger School. In 2008, serving as a infantry platoon leader in Najil, Afghanistan, he commanded a combat outpost and received multiple awards including the Combat Action Badge.

While working full time for the military, age restrictions prevented him from transferring into aviation, so he obtained a civilian helicopter license and worked for two years as a flight instructor.

He began working at North Penn-Liberty High School nine years ago, where he teaches chemistry, biology and military preparation.

He is the husband of Tiffany R. Ohnmeiss and the father of Nicholas R. Ohnmeiss. He also is a member of the Mansfield VFW Post 6757.
