Grace H. Housel

Grace H. Housel, of Muncy, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. She was the widow of the late James S. Housel, who died Aug. 11, 1977.

Born in Muncy Township, she was a daughter of the late William W. and Lizzie A. (Bieber) Hoffman.

A 1932 honors graduate of Muncy High School, she was a member of the Glee Club and the Drama Club, participated in her junior class play, and was active in all sports. She served on the Executive Committee of the school’s Alumni Association.

Mrs. Housel worked as a receptionist in Muncy for the late Dr. Sara Hall from 1934 to 1940; and then as a cashier and telephone operator at the former L. L. Stearns in Williamsport from 1941 to 1960.

A member of the Muncy Valley Hospital Auxiliary, she served as president from 1988 to 2001. She was a charter member of the Muncy Valley Hospital Lawn Party committee and volunteered for many years in the hospital. In March 2002 she received a citation for her many years of service and dedication to the hospital.

She was a charter member and past president of the Muncy Garden Club; a member of the Monsey Chapter No. 41, Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Muncy Historical Society. She previously served on Muncy Borough Council and was a past board member for the Muncy Public Library and for the executive board of the Buffalo Valley Lutheran Home, Lewisburg.

An active member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Turbotville, Mrs. Housel enjoyed performing as a soprano soloist there and as a guest soloist in several area churches. She also previously sang with the former Muncy Choral Club.

There are no immediate survivors. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by five brothers.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the chapel of the Muncy Valley Hospital, 215 E. Water St., Muncy. Officiating will be her pastor, the Rev. Erwin C. Roux, assisted by Sister Sharon Hartman.
