Fred L. Smith

Fred L. Smith, 90, formerly of 209 Carpenter St., Muncy, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit, where he resided for more than a year.

Born in Muncy on April 6, 1918, he was a son of the late Clyde and Regina (Laurenson) Smith.

His wife of 67 years, the former Ruth Catherine Wilkinson, died March 16, 2008.

A U. S. Army veteran of World War II, he was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart, the European African Middle Eastern Service ribbon, the World War II Victory ribbon and a Bronze Star.

Fred was employed as a shipping clerk at the former Sprout-Waldron in Muncy for many years, retiring in 1979. Prior to that he worked at the former Fred Neufer’s Sunoco gas station located at Main & Mechanic Streets in Muncy.

An amateur photographer, he could often be found with his camera. He also enjoyed traveling.

Surviving are a daughter, Gloria R. Perry of Muncy; a grandson, Larry P. Smith, Jr., of Williamsport; a granddaughter, Deanna Wertz and her husband, Tom, of Spokane, Washington, and a great-grandson, Corey Wertz.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry P. Smith, Sr., who died in 1987, and a brother, Wilfred Smith, who died in 1997.

Burial will be held privately in Muncy Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association, 57 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701 or the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit, 215 E. Water St., Muncy, PA 17756.

Arrangements are being handled by Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy.
