Rev. George Daugherty
George W. Daugherty, entered into his heavenly home on Friday, Jan. 9 at Valley View Nursing Home, with his family by his side. He was born in Williamsport on October 9, 1930, the son of George A. and Helen Staggart Daugherty.
George was the oldest of 14 children and began working at an early age in order to help his family. At the age of 19, he started attending what is now the Biblical Life Institute in Freeport, PA. He worked his way through school by farming, working in the print shop and helping to build the chapel and other buildings. After Bible School, he started his life in God’s service. George was the pastor for various area churches, including the South Avis Community Chapel and Moreland Community Church.
George retired from C.A. Reed’s after 25 years and then spent some time as missionary to the Sioux Indians at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. After this, he supervised the remodeling of the former Rialto Theater in Williamsport for The Door Fellowship.
George is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, Stephen, of Muncy; three daughters, Sheila (Bill) Riggs of Canton, Sonia (Dwayne) Bridendolph of Green Castle; Sarita (Randy) Gullet of Lykens; a step-daughter, Robin Robbins of Hughesville; four sisters, Peggy Baysore, Sandy (Grant) Steers, Becky (Jim) Koons of Muncy and Mary Jane Phirman of Rock Hill, S.C.; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Charles, Paul, David, James and Joseph; three sisters, Sarah, Betty and Barbara; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Daugherty.
Funeral services are entrusted to the Morse and Kleese Funeral Home, Canton. Viewing will be held at the New Covenant Assembly of God Church on Pinchtown Road in Montgomery from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday evening and services 11 a.m. Friday, with his pastor, Rev. Jim Pentz, conducting the service.
