Joseph E. Wentzler
Joseph E. Wentzler, 83, of 217 Lycoming Mall Road, Pennsdale, passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at the Muncy Valley Hospital.
He was born Aug. 29, 1925, in Williamsport, a son of Carl W. and Isabelle McConnell Wentzler.
In 1943, Joseph graduated from Montoursville High School and then went on to serve in the United States Navy during WW II. He received a bachelor of science in horticulture at Penn State University and then went on to receive his master’s degree of science in horticulture, also from Penn State University. In 1951, he married the former Lois A. Peters, and on Aug. 2 they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Joseph then purchased a farm in Muncy Twp., where he established Wentzlers’ Fruit Farms in 1953.
He was a member of the Pennsdale United Methodist Church, where he was a Sunday School teacher for many years. Joseph’s other memberships include Lodge #299 F & A.M.-Muncy, the Williamsport Consistory, the PA State Horticulture Association for 55 years (serving on various committees, on the Board of Directors for eight years, and the Research Board), the International Dwarf Fruit Association for 30 years (serving six years on the Board of Directors), the Central Pennsylvania Fruit Growers (including past President), served 20 years on Muncy Township Planning Commission, served 16 years on the Muncy School Board (including past president), and a member of the International Apple Institute.
Joseph was predeceased by three brothers, John M., Carl L. and Dr. James D. and a sister, Mary W. Lander.
Surviving him besides his wife are two sons, J. Edwin (Sally) of Montoursville and Clarence R. (Kathy) of Muncy; a daughter, Karen W. (Art) Woolever of Montoursville; a brother, William R. of Montoursville; six grandchildren, Dustin, Hunter, Andy, Riley Wentzler, Tyler and Caleb Woolever, a great-grandson, Daven Wentzler.
A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
