Leland E. Whitmoyer
Leland E. Whitmoyer, 88, of Whitmoyer Road, Watsontown, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2009, at Muncy Valley Skilled Nursing, where he had been residing since March.
Born Oct. 5, 1920, in Unityville, he was the son of the late Abraham R. and Rena (Green) Whitmoyer. He was married to the former Ruth E. Fry in 1954 and they celebrated 34 years of marriage, until her death, July 27, 1988.
He graduated in 1938 from Muncy High School, where he was very active with the Future Farmers of America. He began his working years with Harold Corson in Hughesville during the 1940’s and was a guard at the old Allenwood Prison in Elvira briefly. In 1956, he began farming in rural Turbotville and farmed until his health failed.
Leland enjoyed snowmobiling in his earlier days and was an avid hunter. He especially enjoyed hunting with friends at Fred Yeagle’s in the Muncy Hills and also with Wayne VanDine’s hunting club. Earlier in the 1940’s, he enjoyed hunting at the Ticklish Rock Hunting Club.
He was a member of Holy Spirit Evangelical Lutheran Church, Turbotville.
Surviving are a son, Gary L. Whitmoyer and his fiance, Mae I. Menges of Watsontown; a daughter, Sylvia Hess and her husband, Ron of Montoursville; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois McCarty, Hughesville and Arlene (Dan) Marquardt, Sonestown.
Preceding him in death besides his wife, was a brother, Carl Whitmoyer.
Friends are invited to call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 10275 Route 44, Watsontown, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, by the Rev. Dan May, his pastor. Burial will follow in Muncy Cemetery.
The family suggests contributions in his memory be made to Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 6, Turbotville, PA 17772.
