Donald C. Smith
Donald C. Smith, 88, of Hughesville, died Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at his home.
Born January 1, 1922, in Hughesville, he was a son of the late Chester I. and Mary M. Babcock Smith. His wife of 51 years, the former Helen M. Phillips, preceded him in death on May 14, 1993.
Donald was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army and was awarded two purple hearts. He was a member of the Muncy VFW and the Bower-Decker American Legion, Montgomery.
Donald retired in 1985 from the former Grumman Company after having worked there for over 16 years. He enjoyed making gun cabinets and furniture and was well known for his woodworking skills. Donald also enjoyed fishing, gardening and most of all, dancing with his friends.
Surviving are three daughters, Carolyn V. Fleming of Watsontown, Jane L. (David) Young of Albuquerque, N.M. and Ann Marie (Ronald) Wilson of Unityville; a sister, Marian Christensen of Salem, Ohio; a nephew, James W. Montague of Liberty; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Donald was preceded in death by a son, Charles C. Smith; four sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with Pastor Tammy Lawson officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hughesville, with graveside military honors accorded by combined veterans organizations.
Friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
