Edward Hugh Cannon and Doris A. Kirkman Cannon

Edward Hugh Cannon, 81, and Doris Ann Kirkman Cannon, 79, both of Gap, Pa., formerly of Muncy, Pa., passed away due to unrelated illnesses.

Edward passed away on Monday, June 14, 2010. He was born in Tuscarora, Pa., son of the late Hugh and Julia Bell Cannon. Doris passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2010. She was born in Elizabeth, N.J., daughter of the late Robert P. and Marie Cunningham Kirkman.

The Cannons celebrated 55 years of marriage on July 3rd of last year. They were devoted to each other and it is very reflective of their relationship that they would pass from this life into eternal life within a few days of each other.

They were members of the Church of the Resurrection of Muncy, Pa. They were both also members of the Moose Club of Muncy.

Edward was part owner of the former Cannon Brother’s Service Station, Piscataway, N.J. He retired from the military in 1976 after 28 years of service and was a dedicated military soldier. He served during WW II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Christiana American Legion, Moose Club of Muncy and a life member of the V.F.W.

Doris worked for F.W. Woolworth for 10 years retiring in 1990. She was also a homemaker, supporting her husband as a military wife. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary of Muncy. She enjoyed reading, sports, sewing, quilting and she dearly loved animals. One of her greatest achievements was that she was on the 1952 US Olympic Gymnastics team in Helsinki, Finland. They loved spending time with family and friends at their Muncy farm.

Surviving is a daughter, Julia A., wife of Chester A. Reed II, of Gap. They were very dedicated and loved by their two grandchildren, Jeffrey E. and Brianna M. Reed, both of Gap. Edward is survived by two sisters, Anna R. Miranda of South Plainfield, N.J. and Theresa M. Fogel of Hughesville, Pa. He was preceded in death by six siblings, Helen Berger, Patricia Miranda, Hugh, Mary, Francis and Joseph Cannon. Doris was preceded in death by two siblings, Marie Purcell and Robert Kirkman. They were loved by their nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial took place at the Church of the Resurrection, 75 Musser Lane, Muncy, Pa. on June 24 with Father Glenn McCreary officiating. Interment was private. Contributions may be made to Pelotonia c/o Jeffrey Reed, 5738 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gap, PA 17527. These funds will be used towards their grandsons sponsorship of a cancer bike ride.
