Ann Merritt Corson

Ann Merritt Corson, 74, of 604 Shuttle Hill Road, Muncy, and 551 Paseo Lazo, Green Valley, Arizona, died Thursday, November 11, 2010, at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit.

Born January 21, 1936, in Cuba, NY, she was a daughter of the late George Eaton and Ruth E. (Hennekey) Merritt Hawkins. She and her husband of 50 years, Lt. Colonel William E. Corson, were married in Rochester, NY, on July 2, 1960.

Ann attended school through 11th grade in New York, and graduated with the class of 1954 from Penn Hall Prep School in Chambersburg, PA. In 1959 she earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Elementary and Secondary Education from Lycoming College, Williamsport, and pursued post graduate studies at Bucknell and Penn State Universities. Ann taught from 1959 until 1962 and again from 1972 until retiring in 1991. Two of those years she was a fourth grade teacher in the South Williamsport school district and for 23 years she taught ninth grade at Warrior Run High School.

She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Muncy. Ann was a member since 1972 and past President for eight years of the Muncy Business & Professional Women’s Club. She was proud to be a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and maintained membership in the Lycoming Chapter D.A.R. as well as associate membership in the Madera Canyon Chapter D.A.R. in Green Valley, Arizona. A life member of both the Muncy Historical Society and the Warrior Run-Fort Freeland Heritage Society, she volunteered her service in each of their many activities. Ann was also a volunteer and member of the Muncy Valley Hospital Auxiliary. In addition she maintained memberships in her professional education associations, the N.E.A. and P.S.E.A. Ann also served on the board of directors of Penn Hall Alumnae Association, Chambersburg. She was a member of the Order of First Families of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and was a direct descendant of the first governor, Thomas Olney.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one son, William Eaton Corson of Muncy; a cousin, Dana Knight Heim of Cleveland, TN; one niece, Pamela Jo Corson of Pipersville; one nephew, Mark Roger Corson of Raleigh, NC; one sister-in-law, Shirley (Roger) Corson of Milton; one stepsister, Elaine Hawkins Joseph of Bloomfield, NY; and one stepbrother, Russell (Delores) Hawkins of Canandaigua, NY. She also maintained a lifelong friendship with Rinske (Van Hoff) McLiesh of Holland and New Zealand, and Rinske’s daughter, Leeann (McLiesh) Peake.

The funeral was at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy. Officiating was her pastor, Rev. David Culbertson. Burial followed in Muncy Cemetery.

Friends were received on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
