Ruth E. Swisher

Ruth E. Swisher, 100, of Hughesville passed away at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, at the Muncy Valley Hospital, Skilled Nursing Unit. She was born March 31, 1910, in Nordmont, a daughter of the late Samuel Fisher Cole and Cora Bell Reese Cox. She was married to the late Delvan Robert Swisher, who passed away Oct. 14, 1967.

She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Leona Allbeck Bible Class. In 1980, she retired as a supervisor from Lysock View Nursing home after 12 years of service. She and her husband had also owned and operated Swisher’s Store from 1949-1968. Earlier in life, she had worked for the former Rubberworks in Williamsport, the silk mill in Hughesville and Lakeside in Eagles Mere, where she met her husband. Ruth was one of the founders of the Hughesville Fire Company, Ladies Auxiliary and loved painting, writing poetry and spending time with her family.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas L. (Carolyn “Butch”) Swisher, Hughesville and Robert D. “Chuck” (Betsy), Swisher, Laporte; four grandchildren, Robyn Paust, Jaime Ijams and Jesse and Casey Swisher and six great-grandchildren, Alysa and Leah Paust, Kayleigh Swisher, Lincoln Ijams, Campbell Ijams and Autumn Swisher.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Gertrude Miller, Florence Best and Mary Sherwood and five brothers, Bruce, Frank, Merle, Samuel and Wilbur Cox.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 28 in the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville by the Rev. Cinda Brucker. The interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Hughesville. The family received friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
