Anna Elizabeth Alford

Anna Elizabeth Alford, 53, of Hughesville, died Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, Va.

Anna was born in Bethesda, Md., and grew up at Crystal Lake Camps in Hughesville. She graduated from Hughesville High School and received her BA in English at Principia College in Elsah, Ill. She received her law degree from Western New England College in Springfield, Mass. Anna passed the PA Bar but ultimately devoted herself to camp directing as her career. She was passionate about helping young people grow personally, socially, spiritually through summer camp activities. Anna served as Assistant Director and Director of Crystal Lake Camps for many years and was a member of the Crystal Lake Board of Directors. She was an active member of the American Camping Association.

Following her work as Camp Director, Anna worked for an organization in Campbell, Calif., providing independent living for developmentally challenged adults. She also managed a senior residential facility in Salem, Ore. Anna came home to Crystal Lake to help her mother, Dottie. Anna was owner of Bellevue Cottage B&B near Crystal Lake and managed the Crystal Lake Ski Center.

Anna was also very active in the local community. She was volunteer editor of The Guardian newspaper in Williamsport, an active supporter of local Democratic Party activities, a volunteer usher at the Williamsport Community Arts Center, and a strong supporter of environmental issues.

Anna is survived by her mother, Dorothy S. Alford, who lives in Island Falls, Maine. She is predeceased by her father, Josiah P. Alford and her sister, Katharine M. Alford.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2012, at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. Max L. Walters Jr. officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to the time of services at the funeral home.
