Dorothy Joyce Smith Burkhart

Dorothy Joyce Smith Burkhart, 77, of Hughesville, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit.

Born Jan. 28, 1935, in Warrior Run, she was a daughter of the late Roy L. and Dorothy B. Myers Smith. She and her husband, Paul G. Burkhart, celebrated 56 years of marriage on May 19, 2012.

Dorothy was a graduate of Hughesville High School, class of 1952. She was employed at the former Acme, Williamsport, for 11 years. Following her employment there, she and her husband owned and operated the Steam Valley Inn, Trout Run, for over 30 years.

A member of the Moreland Community Church, Dorothy also enjoyed crossword puzzles, quilting and playing cards in her card club.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Daniel P. Burkhart of Hughesville; two daughters, Sherry P. (Ed) Osmond of Montoursville and Beth J. (Gordon) Laudenslager of Liberty; three brothers, Rex L. (Anna) Smith of Horseheads, N.Y., D. Ned (Jackie) Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Richard H. (Shirley) Smith of Arnot; a sister, Linda L. Eichenlaub of Hughesville; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with Pastor Harry Harter officiating. Burial followed in Moreland Lutheran Cemetery. Friends called from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
