Leon C. Myers Jr.

Leon C. Myers Jr., 88, formerly of Hughesville and Williamsport, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, Pa.

Born Dec. 13, 1923, in Strawbridge, he was the son of Leon C. Myers Sr. and Jane Holmes Myers. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Strawbridge through eighth grade and graduated from Hughesville High School in 1941. He received a degree in Chemistry from Bucknell University in 1944, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He joined the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in Japan during the American Occupation. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of First Lieutenant.

Leon returned from the service and joined his father in the operation of the Leon C. Myers Lumber Company until 1972. He and his family also raised Angus cattle on Pennridge Farm near Strawbridge. He then went to work for Reese Lumber Company and obtained an associate degree in Accounting from Penn College. From 1975 to 1995, Leon served as Secretary of the Williamsport Consistory.

By both age and service, Leon was the oldest living Past Master of the Muncy Masonic Lodge No. 299. He was Worshipful Master in 1953 and conferred 103 degrees in the Muncy Lodge from 1947 to 1965. He was also a member of the Williamsport Consistory, Irem Temple Shrine and Zafar Grotto.

Leon was a longtime member of Kedron United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and taught adult Sunday School for many years. He loved to play golf and was a member of Eagles Mere Country Club from 1970-1998. He continued to golf into his 80s when he lived in Casa Grande, Ariz., and Lancaster, Pa. Leon was an avid reader throughout his life, and he also enjoyed watching the Phillies and playing bridge.

Leon is survived by four children and two sisters: two sons, Keith Myers and wife Nanci of Quincy, Mass., and Jay Myers and wife Bonny of Hughesville; two daughters, Karen Smith and husband Lyman of Gaithersburg, Md., and Beth Ann Myers of Hughesville; sisters, Marian Glennie of King of Prussia and Winifred Odell of Hughesville. Six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and Marjorie Barton Winder of Williamsport, to whom he was married from 1947 to 1978, also survive him. His second wife, Betty M. Myers, predeceased him in 2009.

Leon’s Life Celebration Memorial Service was held at the Sell Chapel at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, Pa., on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 3 p.m. with Chaplain Timothy A. Nickel and Rev. Lyman Smith officiating. Private interment was at the convenience of the family. The family received friends at the Chapel from 2:30 to 3 p.m. and also following the service.
