Chester Bruce Holmes Sr.
Chester Bruce Holmes Sr., 83, of Muncy, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Valley View Nursing Center.
Born Feb. 16, 1929, in Hughesville, he was a son of the late Jasper W. and Lena E. Weaver. He and his wife, the former Dorothy Ann Rupert, would have celebrated 62 years of marriage on March 31, 2013.
Chester served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired from the former Schnadig Corporation in 1994, after having worked there for 46 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 35 Hughesville, Muncy VFW and Church of the Resurrection, Muncy. Chester was also an outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Kelly J. Holmes of Florida, Chester B. (Katie) Holmes of Chester Springs and Randy A. (Lori) Holmes of Hughesville; three daughters, Bonnie L. (David) Eck of Jersey Shore, Joni M. (Larry) Johnson of Milton and Kim Y. (Joel) Venturini of Montoursville; two brothers, Oliver Wendell (Patricia) Holmes of Hughesville and Herbert Carl (Shirley) Holmes of Hughesville; four sisters, Anna Blanche Frantz of Hughesville, Myra Derrick of Lairdsville, Norma Whitmoyer of Muncy and Mildred (Dean) Schreffler of Muncy; 17 grandchildren, Collin Holmes, Zoe Holmes, Alexa Holmes, Maddi Young, Bella Holmes, Ashley Holmes, Carley Holmes, Chelsey Holmes, Katlyn Swank, Jordan Holmes, Jason Eck, Shawn Eck, Scott Johnson, Stacy Bigelow, Angelina Venturini, Anthony Venturini and Joseph Venturini; and 16 great-grandchildren, Jacob Eck, Jared Eck, Haylie Eck, Malia Eck, Elijah Eck, Gabriel Eck, Taylor Johnson, Morgan Johnson, Scott Johnson II, Austin Johnson, Emma Bigelow, Aleaha Bigelow, Avery Bigelow, Owen Bigelow, Carson Stackhouse and Jaydon Stackhouse.
In addition to his parents, Chester was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Holmes and three sisters, Nellie Budman, Grace Swisher and Clara Jane Bower.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Church of the Resurrection, 75 Musser Lane, Muncy, with Rev. Glenn McCreary officiating. Burial followed in Muncy Cemetery with graveside military honors accorded by combined veterans organizations. Friends called from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
