George E. Friel
George E. Friel, 87, of Gearhart Rd., Muncy, died Monday, December 31, 2012 at the Chestnut Hill Hospital, Philadelphia.
Born November 21, 1925 in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Marion (DeWan) Friel McGinnis. He married the former Doris L. Kelley, who preceded him in death on December 21, 2007.
George was a graduate of St. Joseph University, Philadelphia. He served in the US Army during World War II.
He was employed as a Philadelphia police officer, then as a Mountie at Fairmont Park, Philadelphia and as a Philadelphia County Clerk. George opened “Mike’s” bar at 19th and Fairmont Ave., Philadelphia, where he worked as the bartender. He and his wife moved to Muncy in 1998.
George was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, Muncy.
He was a member of the Roland Ritter American Legion, Post 268, Muncy, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Retired Police, Fire and Prison Guard Association of Philadelphia and an active member of the Philadelphia Police Home Association, Inc.
George enjoyed hunting and traveling across the United States.
Surviving are three first cousins, Maryann DeWan Switzer of Lafayette Hill, Joseph DeWan of Phialdelphia and Patrick DeWan of Smyrna, Del.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2013 at his church, 75 Musser Lane, Muncy. Officiating was his pastor, Rev. Glenn McCreary, Episcopal Vicar of the Western Pastoral Region.
Friends were received from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 7, 2013 in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham Twp., Montgomery County.
The family provided the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to the the S.P.C.A, 3201 Reach Rd., Williamsport, PA 17701.
