Paul G. Burkhart

Paul G. Burkhart, 86, of Hughesville, died Sunday, July 7, 2013, at his home.

Born July 10, 1926, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Jacob Xavier and Mary Jane Buker Burkhart. His wife of 56 years, the former Dorothy Joyce Smith, preceded him in death on July 28, 2012.

Paul served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Moreland Community Church. His passion for cooking and baking contributed to the successful ownership of several local businesses, which included Sonny’s Bakery and Restaurant, The Pastry Shop and Steam Valley Inn for over 25 years. Paul also enjoyed playing cards, horse racing and visiting most any casino.

Surviving are two daughters, Sherry (Ed) Osmond of Montoursville and Beth (Gordon) Laudenslager of Liberty; one son, Daniel (Tammy Munson) Burkhart of Hughesville; four brothers, James Burkhart and Robert Burkhart, both of Connecticut, and Carl Burkhart and Donald Burkhart, both of Williamsport; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, Paul was preceded in death by two brothers, John and William Burkhart.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11 at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water Street, Hughesville, with Rev. Harry Harter officiating. Burial followed in Moreland Lutheran Cemetery, Muncy. Friends called from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
