David E. Bower
David E. Bower, 90, of Hughesville, died Sept. 28, 2013, at ManorCare North, Williamsport. He was born Oct. 6, 1922, in Jerome, Ind., a son of the late Charles W. and Kathryn H. (Kehrer) Bower. Feb. 7, 1945, he married the late Anna Kathleen Hill, who died Dec. 18, 2011.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. David graduated from Montoursville High School and worked for Lycoming Silica Sand Division of Koppers, Inc. as a weigh master and salesman from 1947, retiring in 1986. Earlier in life, he had been a member of the Hughesville Friends Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Clerk of the Meeting and on the building committee. He honorably served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict, from 1942 to 1952. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, woodworking and reading.
Dave had been active in many organizations during his life, including the Picture Rocks Lions Club, serving as president, vice president, director and assistant secretary; American Society of Highway Engineers, serving on the National Board of Directors; Appalachian Throughway Association, serving as the Lycoming County Chapter Chairman; Christian Businessman’s Association; East Lycoming School District School Board; Wolf Township auditor and on the Wolf Township Zoning Hearing Board.
He is survived by two sons, Richard L. (Patricia) Bower, of Palmer, Ark. and Jefferey L. (Cynthia) Bower, of Hughesville; two daughters, Debra E. Bower, of Maryland and Phyllis A. Bower, of Bumpass, Va.; four grandchildren, John David Bower, Michael J. Bower, Amy Jenkins and Mary P. Burns; 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Agnes Bower, of Muncy, Ellen Baer, of Shippensburg and Barbara (Robert) Harding, of Hughesville.
In addition to his wife of 66 years and parents, David was preceded in death by three brothers, Jacob K., Willard S. and Harold S. Bower and two sisters, Irene E. Bower and Hazel L. Fullmer.
Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, by Rev. Cinda J. Brucker. The interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with graveside military honors accorded by local combined military organizations. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Organ Fund of Christ United Methodist Church, 148 S.
