William Hughes Fraser

William Hughes Fraser, 93, of Hughesville, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit.

Born Oct. 21, 1919, in Orange, N.J., he was a son of the late James and Gladys Hughes Fraser. He and his wife, the former M. Jeanne Rozelle, celebrated 61 years of marriage on Sept. 20, 2013.

Bill was an honors student who graduated from Rutgers University. Following college, he would receive his first job at the Montclair, N.J. Town Hall as an office boy in the Finance Department. His patience and dedication would pay off as he advanced to town auditor, then town comptroller and finally achieving the director of finance position, an impressive span of 43 years. During those years, he became a member of the Municipal Finance Officers Association of New Jersey where he served as president and a member of the executive board for many years. Bill was also a member of the Municipal Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

Bill had a fondness for boats of all kinds and enjoyed teaching safe boating as a member of the New Jersey Power Squadron. He also enjoyed photography, wood working, traveling, and above all, spending time with his family.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Lynette (Medford) Barton, of Hughesville; three grandchildren, Jon (Patty) Barton, Christopher (Lori) Barton and Marc (Leslie) Barton; five great-grandchildren, Thomas Barton, Steven Barton, Zachary Barton, Jackson Barton and Maxwell Barton; five nieces, Anne Neubeck, Lori Charette, Nancy Fraser, Patty Fraser and Barbara Fraser; and a nephew, James Fraser.

In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and John Fraser.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with the Rev. Jane L. O’Borski officiating. A private burial was held in Restland Memorial Park, Hanover, N.J. Friends called from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
