Carl J. “Pete” Smith
Carl J. “Pete” Smith, 94, of Hughesville, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at the Gatehouse. He was born Dec. 5, 1919, in Green Valley, a son of the late Jacob M. and Minnie M. (Castlebury) Smith. May 28, 1941, he married the late Mary Ella Mills, who died May 18, 1986.
He served in the U.S. Navy, during World War II. Pete retired from Sprout-Waldron Manufacturing following 27 years as a drill press operator. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 35, Highland Lake 40 et 8, Hughesville and a charter member of the Muncy Valley Moose. He loved hunting, fishing, trapping and gardening.
Pete is survived by two sons, Larry C. (Carolyn) Smith, of Hughesville and Gary W. Smith, of Hughesville; four daughters Donna M. Walker, of Hughesville, Carlene L. (Dick) Mausteller, of Hughesville, Deborah J. (Bob) Ditzler, of Lairdsville and Denise L. (Mark) Lyons, of Hughesville; ten grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildrenIn addition to his wife, of 44 years, and his parents, Pete was preceded in death by a grandson, Samuel Walker Jr.; two brothers, Lawrence and Charles Irvin Smith and a son-in-law, Samuel Walker Sr.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, in the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, by Pastor Richard DeMarte. The interment was in the Twin Hills Memorial Park, with graveside military honors accorded by combined military organizations.
The family received friends in the funeral home Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
