Delroy R. Newcomer
Delroy R. Newcomer, 80, of Muncy, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Unit.
Born March 29, 1933,in Pennsdale, he was a son of the late Leroy and Eleanor Reed Newcomer. He and his wife, the former Shirley E. Taylor, celebrated 28 years of marriage on May 14, 2013.
Delroy retired from the U.S. Army after serving his country honorably during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. One of the highlights of his military career was teaching new recruits at West Point and University of Montana. He was also awarded Soldier of the Year in 1964 at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii.
Following his military career, Delroy was employed with and retired from the former Sprout-Waldron’s, Muncy, after having worked there for 15 years. He was also employed at Lending Textiles for over 10 years.
Delroy was a member of the American Legion Post 35, Hughesville, the Muncy VFW and the Muncy Valley Moose. He was an avid Phillies and Notre Dame fan who also enjoyed birds and caring for his lawn and garden.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Debra K. (Michael) Steransky, of Muncy; two brothers, Kenneth (Kathleen) Newcomer, of Olympia, Wash. and Ronald Newcomer, of Alaska; two granddaughters, Eve Steransky and Christina Gordner; a step-daughter, Barbara (Perry) Haldeman, of Hughesville; a step-son, Randall (Donna) Barto, of Pennsdale; five step-grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Delroy was preceded in death by a daughter, Constance A. King.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water Street, Hughesville, with Pastor Richard L. DeMarte officiating. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Hughesville. Friends called from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
