Van Dorn Wertman, Jr.
Van Dorn Wertman, Jr., 87, of Muncy, went to be with his Lord on Friday, March 7, 2014, surrounded by his loving family at home. Born April 4, 1926, in Northumberland County, he was the son of Van Dorn, Sr. and Alberta (Fritz) Wertman. On June 1, 1948, he married Audrey Finck, of Allenwood. Together they celebrated 65 happy years of marriage.
Van was an active member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Muncy. He served on church council, as lay worship assitant, lector, and Sunday School Superintendent.
He was a 1944 graduate of Muncy High School. Van was a proud Navy World War II Veteran. He worked for the family-owned butchering/meat cutting business, the A&P, and retired from The Country Store, Pennsdale, in 1987. He then worked as a courier for the Muncy Bank and Trust Company and served as a volunteer in the radiology department at Muncy Valley Hospital.
Van was formerly involved in Muncy Little League as a coach and also as treasurer of the Muncy High School Band Parents. He enjoyed meeting at the Grange News Agency for coffee with his friends. He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, and also attended many Crosscutter games. In July, 2012, he was honored as a “super voter” of Lycoming County for voting in 50 consecutive elections.
He had a green thumb when it came to gardening, and spent many hours in woodworking and special projects. However, his greatest love was spending time with his children and grandchildren!
In addition to his loving wife, Van is survived by four children, Gail (Ed) Lewis of Camden, DE, Joy (Dean) Barto of Hughesville, Dr. Gary (Lynn) Wertman of Shade Gap, and Julie Souter of Muncy; seven grandchildren, Matthew Barto, Kimberly Crisp, Dr. Gary Wertman II, Christopher Wertman, Amy Brinser, and Jennifer and Erica Souter; four great-grandchildren, Conner Barto, Sydney and Kylie Crisp, and Teagan Brinser; and one brother, Marlin (Naomi) Wertman of Muncy.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son-in-law, Budd M. Souter, Jr.
A service of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 201 S. Main St., Muncy, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, with his pastor, Rev. Dr. Donald P. Edwards officiating. Interment was in the Muncy Cemetery with full military honors. There was a visitation at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Van’s name to St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 201 S. Main St., Muncy, PA 17756 or Susquehanna Health Home Care and Hospice, 1100 Grampian Boulevard, Williamsport, PA 17701.
