Marie E. “Mike” Barnes, 89, formerly of Hughesville, died Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Hollidaysburg Veterans Home.

Born March 19, 1924 in Grampian, PA, she was a daughter of the late Francis and Genevieve (Rafferty) Mallon. On August 17, 1963 she married Fred “Curt” Barnes, who preceded her in death on March 29, 2010.

A graduate of St. Francis High School in Clearfield, she began a long and varied work career, which started at Piper Aircraft in 1942 and ended when she retired from Muncy Valley Hospital at the age of 70. “Mike” also assisted her husband in operating the former Melody Bar in Williamsport, the former Pine Caf in Muncy and the former Mike’s Tavern in Hughesville.

She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection, Muncy, since 1957.

“Mike” was a charter member of the Muncy Valley Women of the Moose; and a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Roland Ritter Post 268 American Legion, Muncy, and the Edward J. Smith Post 3428 V.F.W., Muncy

Surviving are two sons, Daniel Dougherty of Middletown and Brian Curtis Barnes of Muncy; five daughters, Kay Ann (Jim) Torsell of Tyrone, Joyce (Gary) Peterman of Grass Valley, Calif., Deb (Dennis) Battuello of Superior, Wisconsin, Rosemary Bower of Williamsport, and Pauline (Dave) Dawson of Chantilly, Virginia; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by eight siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19, at the Church of the Resurrection, 75 Musser Lane, Muncy. Officiating was her pastor, Rev. Glenn McCreary. Burial followed in Muncy Cemetery.

Friends were received from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy and again from 9 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.

A rosary was recited at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
