Robert Alton Sheets
Robert Alton Sheets, 75, well-known resident of North Towanda, formerly of Hughesville, passed away Friday morning, April 18, 2014, at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre.
Robert was born in Muncy, PA, on May 22, 1938, the son of Gus and Iva Little Sheets. Following graduation from Hughesville High School, Robert served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960. He later attended and graduated from Williamsport Area Community College. Robert was employed by the Bradco Supply Company in North Towanda for 53 years. He was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston, Mass. Robert served as chairman of the North Towanda Township Board of Supervisors; president of the Western Bradford County Council of Governments; and secretary of the Bradford County Progress Authority.
He was a life member of the Franklin Engine Company in Towanda; charter member of the North Towanda Fire Department; member of the Bradford County Fire Police; and was a life member of the Bradford County Outboard Motor Club. Robert enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and fishing trips to Canada. Most of all he enjoyed working.
Surviving are: his wife, Eileen Thompson Sheets; sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Tammy Sheets, of North Towanda, Bill and Patty Sheets, of Towanda, Bob and Diane Sheets, of Towanda, Gerald “Jass” and Cindy Sheets, of Towanda; daughter and son- in- law, Tonya and Andy Barnett of, North Towanda; grandchildren: Christopher Lee, Joshua, Jarrett, Nathan, Tricia, Taylor, Tyler, Christopher Kitson, Jimmy, Justin, Jeremy, Rhyan, Wyatt, Myriah; great-grandchildren, Kenley and Ryker; siblings and spouses Betty and Jim Giles, of Jersey Shore, Les and Linda Sheets, of Denton, Texas, Nancy and Bill DeWire, of Hughesville, Lee and Katie Sheets, of San Diego, Calif, Jane and Alan Flenner, of Harrisburg, Mark and Sheila Sheets, of Muncy, Edie and Bill Heinzelmann, of The Villages, Fla, Earla and Tom Gower, of Montoursville, Ann and Keith Wallis, of Muncy, Gale and Dean Kaler, of Milton; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Loretta and Edward Kukiates, of Towanda, sisters-in- law, Shirley Sheets, of Arlington, Texas, Winona Benjamin, of Wysox, Doris Jane Simonds, of Elmira, N.Y., Dorothy Bomboy Benjamin, of Wysox, brother-in-law, Jerry Webster, of Towanda; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace M. Benjamin Sheets on July 17, 2001; an infant son; his father and mother, Gus and Iva Sheets; brother and sister-in-law, Landy and Doris Sheets; brother, John Sheets; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Gerry Benjamin.
The funeral service will be held today, Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home 217 York Ave. Towanda, PA, with Pastor Bill Kleese officiating.
Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 will accord military honors at the funeral home. The family received friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Wednesday morning at the funeral home.
