Robert A. Bitler Sr.

Robert A. “Cowboy Bob” Bitler Sr., 78, a resident of Muncy, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, in the Geisinger Medical Center. Born in Millville, Columbia County, on Friday, May 8, 1936, he was the son of the late Harry T. and Eva (Sponenburg) Bitler.

Bob honorably served during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army.

He was last employed as a security guard. He had previously been employed by the former Philco-Ford at Watsontown.

Bob was a lifetime member of the Edward J. Smith V.F.W. Post 3428 at Muncy and the Millville American Legion Post. He enjoyed playing the fiddle and attending blue grass festivals, watching pool tournaments, fishing and socializing with people. Bob was an avid reader.

He is survived by six children, Karen L. and husband, Thomas Clayton, of Watsontown, Kathy A. and husband, David Nevel, of Hughesville, Robert A. Bitler Jr., of Montgomery, Marge S. and husband, James Poust, of Muncy, Penny J. Benscoter and fiance, Will J. Zink III, of Muncy, Dale L. Bitler and fiance, Danielle Gordner, of Watsontown; and one brother, Frederick Springer, of Sunbury. Bob is also survived by 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Bob was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren and two brothers, Paul Springer and George Springer.

Funeral services were conducted from the Galen R. Betzer Funeral Service, 108 N. Main St., Muncy at 12 noon on Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, with the Rev. James R. Pentz, pastor of the New Covenant Assembly at Montgomery, officiating. Interment was in the St. John Lutheran “Brick” Cemetery. Friends called on Monday from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Graveside military honors were accorded by the joint veterans organizations. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to help defray funeral expenses be made to Dale L.
