The Rev. Alton R. Johnson
The Rev. Alton R. Johnson, 99, of Hughesville, died Sunday, July 27, 2014, at the Muncy Valley Hospital. He was born April 16, 1915, in Philadelphia, a son of the late Lawrence and Kathryn (Farrel) Johnson. Oct. 1, 1939, he married the late Mary Berkey, who died in 1984.
He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He worked for 32 years for the Crown Cork and Seal Co., Philadelphia as a Quality Control Inspector. During his final years at Crown, he attended Bible School to become a preacher. He served the Noxen Gospel Tabernacle, Noxen and served as associate pastor of the Grace Independent Baptist Church, Penndel.
Alton is survived by a daughter, Carole (Jack) Jones, of Muncy; two grandchildren, Bruce (Alana) Jones, of Montoursville and Bethanne (Bret) Berger, of Clemmons, N.C.; and five great-grandchildren, Donnovan and Emma Berger and Brock, Heath and Chase Jones.
Alton was preceded in death by a daughter, Lana M. Johnson; a brother, Lawrence Johnson Jr.; and two sisters, Blanche Farrell and Rejessa Hanf.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Hatboro Cemetery, 36 Fulmore Ave., Hatboro. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, in the Grace Baptist Church, 5471 Clarkstown Road, Muncy, by the Rev. Charles Tefteller.
