Carl Oscar Shaner

Carl Oscar Shaner, 89, of Muncy, passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2014, in Williamsport Regional Medical Center surrounded by family.

Born in Moreland Township on April 5, 1926, he was a son of the late Oscar L. Shaner and Blanche Craig Shaner. He was married to the former Margaret Hall Shaner and they would have observed their 57th wedding anniversary on August 16, 2014.

Carl attended Frenchtown School and graduated from Hughesville High School.

Carl was a member of the United States Army where he served in Korea during the Korean War.

Carl went on to work for his brother Verus Shaner at Farm Bureau in Hughesville and eventually onto Agway in Williamsport where he retired after 35 years of service.

Carl enjoyed his time working around the farm, tinkering at engines, gardening, serving others, and spending time with his three grandchildren.

Carl was an auditor for Moreland Township for several years. Carl was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Services as a donor and volunteer enjoying the company of others.

Carl was an active member of the Moreland Community Church.

Carl is survived by his wife, Margaret Hall Shaner, of Muncy; his son Carl L., of Unityville and his wife Cindy DeWire Shaner; three grandsons, Cameron, Conner, and Chase; two sisters, Sarah Harman, of Hughesville and Mary Peters, of Williamsport; and three brothers, Harland Shaner and Paul Shaner, both of Hughesville and Archie Shaner, of Montoursville.

Carl was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carla Shaner; two brothers, Verus Shaner and Arthur Shaner Sr.; and a sister, Carrie Bordy Frye.

Friends and relatives will be received today on Wednesday, August 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville. A funeral service will held on August 14, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the Moreland Community Church with the Pastor Harry Harter officiating. Burial will follow in Muncy Cemetery and a reception following the burial at the Lairdsville Community Volunteer Fire Company Social Hall.

Memorial contributions in Carl’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Moreland Community Church, Church Drive, Muncy.
