Merle E. Gooch

Merle E. Gooch, 88, of West Chester, Ohio, passed away, Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Barrington of West Chester, surrounded lovingly by family.

Merle was born October 10, 1926, in Mannington, West Virginia to Roy and Nola Gooch. Merle, the eldest of five siblings, and his family relocated to Trenton, New Jersey, where he met his loving wife of 64 years, Lois Johnson. From 1944-1946, Merle served his country as a bombardier in the Navy from which he received honorable discharge.

After their marriage in 1950, at the Ewing Presbyterian Church in Trenton, New Jersey, Merle and Lois started their family of four, kind, compassionate and caring boys; all of whom took after their father with such admirable traits. Merle and Lois raised their boys in Hughesville, Pennsylvania where they spent 50 wonderful years. Throughout their cherished time in Hughesville, Merle worked as a career salesman in mobile equipment, served as a deacon in their church and remained a devoted husband and father. Merle was a man of few words, but his constant smile was infectious to all those who surrounded him. His love of the weather will provide a continuous comfort to his family, for every time the sun shines, they will know he is affectionately watching over them with his big blue eyes.

Merle is survived by his wife Lois Johnson Gooch, whom he adored for 64 wonderful years; His four sons, David and his wife Robin of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Jeffery and his wife Andi of Glen Allen, Virginia, Richard and his wife Colleen of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, and Douglas and his wife Leanne of West Chester, Ohio. Merle was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Nola, his two brothers and one sister, and is survived by his younger sister Carolyn of Trenton, New Jersey. Merle is leaving behind eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren whom will pass on his legacy of living by the “Golden Rule” and always treat others with kindness and compassion.
