Leona F. Miller Chestnut Wertman

Leona F. Miller Chestnut Wertman, 90, of Lairdsville, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2015, at the Gatehouse.

Born Feb. 6, 1925, in Unityville, she was a daughter of the late Brady W. and Sarah A. Reed Miller. She and her husband, William R. Wertman, celebrated 49 years of marriage on July 17, 2014.

Leona was employed at the former Schnadig Furniture, Montoursville, for over 15 years. She was a lifelong member of Fairview United Methodist Church, Unityville, and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Leona also enjoyed sewing, gardening, wall papering, and baking. She was well known throughout the area for her coconut cream pies.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are four daughters, Barbara J. (John) Miller, of Muncy Valley, Judy L. (Chuck) Swisher, of Hughesville, Joanne L. (Frank) Van Haelst, and Linda L. (Gaylord) Morgan, both of Lairdsville; a half brother, Walter (Viola) Miller, of Jersey Shore; a half sister-in-law, Patricia Miller, of Hughesville; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Leona was preceded in death by her first husband of 18 years, George W. Chestnut; three sisters, Martha Sherwood, Edna Snyder, and Veda Whitmoyer; and a half brother, Cloyd Miller.

Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville, with Bill Van Horn and Kathy Burkhart, CLM, co-officiating. Burial followed in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy. Friends called from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
