John R. Vermilya

John R. Vermilya, 99, a lifelong resident of Muncy, died Thursday, May 9, 2019 at UPMC Susquehanna, Williamsport.

Born March 21, 1920 in Muncy, he was a son of the late Lynn and Edna (Gulliver) Vermilya. He and his wife, the former Dorothy E. Diggan, celebrated 30 years of marriage before her death October 24, 1977.

John was a 1938 graduate of Muncy High School. He attended Penn State University’s School of Forestry for 3 years before enrolling in the United States Army Corp of Engineers in 1942. John served with the 108th Combat Engineer Battalion in the European Theater Ribbon with four battle stars and earned a battlefield promotion to 1st Lieutenant before being honorably discharged in 1946.

He later retired in 1983 after working as an Accountant for Brodart, Williamsport.

John was a member of Muncy Baptist Church.

He was also a member of the Muncy Historical Society, the Edward J. Smith Post 3428, VFW, Muncy, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the Holland Society of NY.

John loved researching and documenting his family genealogy.

Surviving are three children, John R. Vermilya Jr. and his wife, Schawanna, of Turbotville, Barbara Ann Vermilya, of Muncy, and Linda Raye Vermilya-Boudreau, of Vermont; and five grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by one brother, James “Lewis” Vermilya; and two sisters, Doris Vermilya and Shirley Vermilya.

Friends were received from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, at the Muncy Baptist Church, 11 W. Penn St., Muncy, where a funeral was held at 11 a.m. with his pastor, the Rev. Robert Rice, officiating.

Burial with full military honors followed in the Muncy Cemetery.

The family provided the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to the Muncy Baptist Church, 11 W. Penn St., Muncy, PA 17756.
