American Legion baseball canceled

By Staff | Apr 22, 2020

The Pennsylvania Department of the American Legion announced last Monday there would be no Legion baseball played during the 2020 season. The move comes a week after the American Legion announced there would be no regional tournaments or World Series because of the unpredictability of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision made effects five area teams. Lewisburg Post 182, Jersey Shore Post 36, Watsontown Post 323 and Williamsport Post 1 all play in the West Branch League. Hughesville Post 35 plays in the Susquehanna Valley League. The Pennsylvania Department of the American Legion said no baseball action which uses its name or logo is authorized.

The American Legion is the first summer-based program to cancel its season amid concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. Little League International still has not made any decisions on the direction it will go. Following recommendations of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Little League has asked all local leagues to suspend any operations and events until at least May 11.
