Hughesville’s Hoover Scoreless, Yet Breaks Record
Compiled from staff reports
The knees of Hughesville players, coaches and fans weakened as Mount Carmel’s Justin Augustine unleashed a shot at the buzzer. It was a scenario that played throughout Hughesville’s season, often with the Spartans on the wrong end.
The Hughesville Spartans advanced to the semifinal round of the District IV Class AA boys tournament with a less-than-scintillating 38-37 victory over Mount Carmel.
“About six times I thought I was going to faint in the last 12 seconds,” said Hughesville coach Nick Tagliaferri.
The third-seeded Spartans (19-4) will face either Lewisburg (12-10) or Troy (20-3) in the semifinals this week at a place and time to be determined.
Hughesville struggled offensively at the start of the first and third quarters. The Spartans missed their first 10 shots to start the game, but their defense kept them within two points after one quarter (8-6). Davis caught fire in the second, hitting three consecutive 3-pointers for a 15-11 lead. The Spartans couldn’t pull away and led just 19-15 at the break.
Another lull to start the third quarter allowed Mount Carmel to regain the lead after six straight points by Wasilewski. Late in the third, though, the Spartans found another long-range threat. Greg Taggart sunk back-to-back 3-pointers for the Spartans final six points in the quarter and allowed them to take a one-point lead (29-28) into the final eight minutes.
Bryan Hoover was held scoreless, but he broke the school’s all-time assist record, passing 1993 graduate Doug Fought.
Bryan Hoover 0 0-0 0, Andy Laychur 1 0-0 2, Jordan Holmes 0 0-0 0, Drew Eiswerth 0 0-0 0, Greg Taggart 3 0-0 8, Rezin Davis 4 4-4 15, Bryce Pardoe 1 2-2 4, Addison Hanford 1 0-0 2, Brian Gurney 2 0-0 5, Torin Jeffreys 1 0-0 2. Totals: 13 6-6 38.
