Muncy defeats Raiders for District title
The Muncy baseball team became the District 4 Class A champions last Wednesday at Bowman Field after defeating archival Montgomery, 5-2, and eliminating them from playoffs. This is the Indians first title since 2006, and its fourth in the last nine years.
Muncy pitcher Doug Zehner pitched his third consecutive post-season win.
Zehner won his area-high ninth game while not allowing an earned run in 6 2/3 strong innings.
The Indians went ahead of the game to stay on Brad Taylor’s fifth-inning sacrifice fly. Catcher Dawson Fox, who went 3 for 4 and was part of that fifth-inning rally. Following Taylor’s sacrifice fly, Sellers smacked a two-out double to right field. Ring hit one to right field and inning later, blasting a two-out, two-strike home run over the fence and putting Muncy ahead 5-2.
Montgomery’s only two runs occurred on Jake Ulrich’s two-out double which ignited a two-run first-inning that put it up 2-0. Ulrich scored on an error and Garrett Shynder stole home on a double steal after Cameron McHenry hit an infield single.
Red Raider pitcher, Derek Russell, started out on the mound striking out five in the first three innings. But Muncy’s Matt Ring’s sacrifice fly tied it at 2-2 in the third and his lead-off single started a two-run fifth inning that put Muncy ahead to stay.
Muncy played District 2 champions, Old Forge, in the first round of the state tournament this past Monday. Results were not available at press time.
