The Legend of the Old Shoe

By Staff | Sep 18, 2012

The Muncy Indian football team display their trophy following their 48-8 win in the "Battle of the Shoe" between Muncy and Montgomery. This is their fifth consecutive win in the battle.

MUNCY – The Old Shoe Trophy or “shoe of the unknown football player” was born in 1961 when, during a discussion concerning an appropriate award for the winner of the annual Muncy vs. Montgomery football game, Dick Dietz and George Sauers picked a shoe out of a pile of leftovers in the Muncy gym, and the tradition was born.

The Muncy Jaycees had it bronzed and placed on a trophy to be given to the winning school in the rival football game each year.

This year, 2012, Muncy beat Montgomery 48 – 8.
