Nixon and Fry Medal

RUTH FRY/The Luminary Two local grapplers brought home hardware after placing at the PIAA Class AA State Championships this past weekend in Hershey. Dakota Nixon, (right), of Muncy, placed for the second year in a row with fifth in the 145-pound weight class. Zach Fry of Hughesville won his first medal at 145 placing eighth and winning his 100th career win.
Muncy senior Dakota Nixon came home from Hershey with another medal after finishing fifth this past weekend at the state tournament in Hershey. This was the seniors second trip and now has two state medals. Last year Nixon finished the tournament sixth. Hughesville junior, Zach Fry, made his third trip to the state tournament and stepped on the podium for the first time with an eight place medal.
Nixon advanced to the fifth-place bout after defeating Fry in overtime before dropping to Nick Monico of Saegertown.
Fry wrestled five matches which three of those matches went into either the tie-break or rideout including one on Saturday in his seventh-place consolation match with Biglerville’s Nate Newberry.
Angelo Barberio, Muncy, went 1-2 in Hershey. Barberio was defeated in the first round at the 113-pound weight class dropping him to the consolation bracket. There, Barberio won his first match by major decision defeating Tyler Alberts of Elwood City before being eliminated in the third round.
Fry and Nixon were two of the three District 4 wrestlers to bring home a medal at 145 pounds. Southern Columbia’s Kent Lane won the 145 title. All three came out of the Heartland Conference Division III, and both Fry and Nixon said the grind they went through each of the last three weeks was great preparation for the state tournament.
