Spartans get revenge

The Spartans got their revenge from their earlier season loss to the Lancers last Friday night in Loyalsock as they knocked them out of contention for the District 4 Class AA title with a 24-14 win. The Spartans will advance to the semi-finals this Friday night in Southern Columbia. Hughesville’s Carter Ohnmeiss ended the game for the Spartans by sacking the quarterback in the finals seconds of the game. Ohnmeiss had a total of 3 1/2 sacks and several tackles throughout the game. Hughesville recorded five sacks in the win and recovered three of Loyalsock’s six fumbles. Zane Gee, Luther Lozano, and Alex Welch all had sacks for the Spartans.
The Spartan defense held Loyalsock’s 2,000-yard lead rusher, Marty Clark, to 74 yards on 14 carries. Only five carries went over six yards. Loyalsock totaled just 167 yards and at the half it had just 41 yards of total offense. The defensive line also rushed their passing game as the Lancers finished with only 61 yards out of 17 attempts.
Hughesville’s Melvin Derhammer scored first on an 11-yard touchdown run to put the Spartans ahead 7-0 late in the first quarter. Derhammer and Ryan McClain both combined for 104 rushing yards.
In the air Quarterback Landon Henry was on the money as he hit his targets throughout the night. With 2:32 remaining until halftime, Henry hit Zach Fry for a 33-yard pass giving the Spartans a 14-7 lead. Henry then found Trey Smith with a pass in the end zone for a 21-7 lead with 4:31 to play. Henry ended the night with six completions for 133 passing yards. All but one of Henry’s completions was for at least 13 yards.
Hughesville made it a 24-7 when Trent Woolcock kicked a 22-yard field goal with 8:43 to play.

Wellsboro defeats Muncy
(District 4 Class A)

The Muncy Indians were defeated by No. 1 seed Wellsboro, 14-0 and were eliminated from playoffs Friday night at Mansfield University in the semifinals of the District 4 Class A tournament. but the Indians showed improvement since their loss (33-12) to the Hornets earlier in the season.
Wellsboro did not score a touchdown until the second quarter of the game as the Indians defense stopped their passing and running game. It wasn’t until 8 minutes in the 2nd that the Hornets scored their first touchdown on a 25-yard pass. After the half, Wellsboro was able to put another mark on the board after 10 minutes into the third quarter on a 60-yard run. The Indians defense held the Hornets to 14 first downs and 50 passing yards.
Cam Good led the Indians with 48 yards on 19 carries and one interception while his younger brother, Coleman, had 38 yards.
