Barberio places in Hershey
Three times a treat in Hershey as Muncy’s Angelo Barberio won his first PIAA Class AA wrestling medal placing sixth Saturday afternoon and gave the Indians a state place winner for the ninth consecutive year with his sixth-place finish at 120. This was Barberio’s third trip to states coming up empty handed until this year.
Barberio won both preliminaries and the first round Thursday morning while recording eight takedowns in the two matches and scoring a combined 20 points and advancing him to the quarterfinals after he defeated returning state fifth-place finisher Jack Hill, of Saucon Valley. In the quarterfinals Barberio secured his first state medal when he defeated Brockway’s, 1-0 and advancing him to the semis. With the win over Carlson and securing a spot on the podium. With Barberio’s sixth-place finish, he tied the school record for second most career wins with 145.
Barberio is one of seven local wrestlers who won a state medal on the final day of the PIAA tournament at the Giant Center.
Milton’s Brandon Stokes won his first state medal, taking a forfeit in the 170-pound fifth place match. Lewisburg’s Jordan Gessner, 3rd, at 120; Loyalsock’s Crae McCracken finished fifth at 285. Montoursville had three medal winners: Gavin Hoffman won the championship bout at 195 while his brother finished second at 182, and Montoursville’s Keith Batkowski won seventh at 145 pounds.
Hughesville’s Zach Fry, lost his match in the first round, 3-2, to eventual state runner-up GioVonne Sanders, of Jeannette, in the 152-pound weight class. Fry ends his high school career tying the school record for most career wins, 130, with 2013 graduate Kyle Barnes. Teammate Trevor Sones, Hughesville, 126, lost in the preliminaries to Tanner Altobelli, of Redbank Valley, by dec., 6-3; and to Jeremy Hanford, Warrior Run, dec., 6-4. Sones ends his high school career with over 100 wins which he achieved at districts.
