Spartans capture Tri-Town Classic

RUTH FRY/The Luminary Jaret Stroup, Hughesville, smacked a walk-off, two-run home run over left field fence as the Spartans defeated the Red Raiders, 11-1, in the sixth inning of the Tri-Town Classic Tournament championship game.

Jaret Stroup, Hughesville first baseman, smacked a walk-off, two-run home run as the Spartans defeated the Red Raiders, 11-1, in the sixth inning winning the championship game. The Spartans dominated the final against playoff-bound Montgomery, with 13 hits, scoring nine runs in the second through the fourth innings and received 5 1/3 strong innings from winning pitcher Dylon Pequignot. Pequignot had seven strikeouts in the win, and seven players delivered hits with Brock Stroup and Hunter Wentzel delivering consecutive two-out RBI singles in the second inning. Hughesville won the first round game blanking Warrior Run, 4-0, as Chance Webb threw five no-hit innings, and Devin Maciejewski, Brock Stroup and Clayton Poust produced two hits each.
Montgomery (11-3) defeated Muncy, 8-6, in its semifinal, rallying from a three-run, third-inning deficit. The Raiders trailed 5-2 in the fourth inning before storming back. Senior Gage Yohn threw three scoreless innings in relief, striking out five to earn the win. He also hit a big game-tying 3-run home run. Colby Springman added another home run and Montgomery took the lead for good in the fifth inning with Springman, throwing a scoreless seventh and sealing the win. Montgomery delivered 18 hits in the two games and had eight against Hughesville.

Hughesville took revenge from an earlier loss in the season edging the Panthers, 4-3. Jacob Corson threw 6 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and hit a go-ahead, two-out RBI triple in the top of the seventh inning to lift Hughesville over Bloomsburg. Devin Swank added two hits and an RBI as Hughesville overcame an early 3-0 deficit.
