Spartan Cross Country team responds to win

By Carol Sones Shetler - | Dec 8, 2021

The Spartan Boys Cross Country team won gold at states, the first team to win a state title in any sport at Hughesville High School. The Luminary asked team members to share thoughts on their hard -fought success and plans for the future.

CAMDEN FETTERMAN – “I was friends with some of the kids that were doing Cross-Country, and figured why not just do it. My main supporters are family and coaches. The coaches and runners are all very close. They always want us to go out and have our best race. At the time they announced we won, the whole team, along with a couple of friends, were together in a big circle. It was like a big hype circle. We started jumping and pushing each other around. After the win was announced, I got on my phone and texted my grandparents who were on vacation at the time. They are my biggest supporters.”

He added, “As for the Cross Country Team, I hope the ‘club’ finally gets recognized as a sport. I think our team should go back and get another state championship next year. I also participate in basketball and track.”

COLE FORTIN – “I became interested in Cross-Country in the seventh grade when my mom introduced it tome. I wasn’t sure at first, but when I persuaded some friends to go out for it, I knew it could be good conditioning for wrestling. And it was. Throughout the ears, I really enjoyed the sport and got a lot better. After winning states, it made me extremely happy, especially knowing it is the first ever team state championship for Hughesville. Winning that title has been on our minds for a long time, but it felt like a dream come true after our race in Hershey. I also participate in track and field, and am looking forward for this coming season. I hope our 4x800m relay team can also win gold at states. Overall, I’m really proud of our team and excited for our win. It couldn’t have been done without our great coaches and determination as a team.”

HUNTER FOUST said, “I had always been a runner and have loved it since a young age. It wasn’t until cross-country when I realized I could make more of talent with the group of guys we had. It wasn’t really anyone in specific, but along with the rest of the team, we immediately went to tell friends at home who’s cheered us on. The other sport in which I’m currently in is track.

I plan to pursue a career in nursing, then on to a good school to become a nurse anesthetist.”

LOGAN LONG – “I became interested in Cross-Country when I was in ninth grade because it seemed fun and because my buddies did it. After we officially found out that we won I believe the first person I told was my brother Austin. I also participate in Frack and Field. After high school, I plan to join the US Air Force.”

SHEA McCUSTER said, “Some time ago, during the elementary track and field day, I had unexpectedly broken the 800 meter time. Josh Gavitt then stopped me while I walked by him and he said, “You had a nice race just now. Would you be interested in cross-country?” Then we had sign ups for fall sports. I saw cross-country, so I decided to try out. I first thought of it as conditioning for basketball, but now its one of the most important things in my life. I felt ecstatic about the win. I was extremely happy with how my team and I had done that paid off. I am proud of myself, but even more proud of my teammates and their hard work. The first person I told was my girl friend who was at home, because I wanted to share the news.”

Shea added, “My participation in sports is basketball, and I plan to be in track again this spring. My future intensions for sports and school, is to make states again next year, and the year after. I’ll also work on my basketball skills to dominate in that scene. I’d also like to further my education into a mathematics degree for teaching.”
