Carter Cowburn threw a five hitter in five innings, and Austin Gray came in throwing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and striking out three, but Saucon Valley defeated the Spartans last Thursday in the Class AAA state quarterfinal, 6-0, at Walter Stump Stadium. The Spartans had four hits in the fourth and fifth innings but errors in those innings caused outs, and one error coming after Gage Thomas hit a two-out single for the Spartans. Thomas, Hoppes, Cowburn, and Wetzel all had a hit apiece in the loss.Hughesville (20-4) set a program record for wins, captured the first league title since 2014, and the first district championship since 2013.
