Student Council members help senior citizens celebrate
MUNCY – Sixty household seniors will be quite pleased this Thanksgiving when they get a visit from Meals on Wheels containing an extra special placemat made just for them by members of the Myers Elementary School’s student council members.
On Thursday afternoon, November 19th, advisors Jean Daniels and Maura Sleboda organized an assembly gathering of 16 student council members in grades four through six to make these one of a kind placemats. These students who were voted by their homeroom classmates to represent their school, each placed their painted hand print to make turkeys with colorful feathers.
Mady Earnest and Anna Springman, 4th graders led the assembly of the placemats by placing the hands on each one before passing onto the next station.
On Tuesday morning, November 20th the placemats were delivered to the Meck Senior Center by kindergarten teacher, John Tewksbury who delivers the Meals on Wheels as a volunteer along with his wife, Leah. “We have been doing this for over ten years,” he replied. “Leah does it during the school year and I do it in the summer.”
“This is a nice way to be thinking of you at Thanksgiving,” added Tewksbury. “Not all homes can get out very well, so we’re glad to be at their house. It is a chance to get food and check on them every day.”
Sleboda said the students were well aware of the program before making the placemats and readily agreed to the project. “We made the hand prints during lunch periods,” she said. “This makes a nice service project for them.”
Bailey Hadzinikolov, President of the Student Council, said, “This is a good idea for people during Thanksgiving.”
Daniels added that last month they helped with the food drive. Another collection was made by the school consisting of clothing and food for families within the school district who are in need.
The student council members who worked on the project are: Alex Mairorana, Bailey Hadzinkolov, Lauren Anderson, Loudon Boring, Lucas Gruver, Conner Harer, Brady Ryder, Kassidy Moyer, Madison Earnest, Konner Shearer, Anna Springman, Melanie Brown, Damon Aikey, Kohen Meyer, Elizabeth Swart, and Kenzie Haas.
