April is so many things. I will start with National Volunteer Month. I can’t think of a better person to receive such an award as Thelma White who is a volunteer at Muncy Valley Hospital. My husband and I have had to be at the hospital on occasion for a procedure very early, 6:30 a.m., and Thelma is always there to greet us. She has been a volunteer at the hospital since 2004. She told me she is in her 80s and has spent over 10,000 hours doing a variety of duties at the hospital from sorting and delivering mail, helping people with admissions, and helping out at the information desk. Thelma escorted me to my doctor’s office and was so bright and cheery so early in the morning. She said she always wants to make sure everyone is comfortable and knows where to go. Thelma is so thoughtful, her co-workers say she even brings in baked goods for meetings and co-workers’ birthdays. She said staying active is the best thing for her. She moves like a twenty year old. It was all I could do to keep up with her walking down the hallway. Thelma certainly deserved this award from UPMC Susquehanna.

Next week is National Library Week and the theme this year is “Libraries Transform.” This is another national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and held every year since 1958 for all libraries across America to promote their use and public support. Most recently, the Muncy Public Library was fortunate enough to receive money for a new projection system thanks to a joint effort among three major local organizations. Our library is a precious asset and a great way to connect with others and the Muncy community. Don’t forget you can rent free movies, music CDs and ebooks. Tuesday, April 11 is National Library Workers Day and look for the Bookmobile on Wednesday, April 12, and also that day is National D.E.A.R. Day Drop Everything and Read. I’m up for that.

April is also Child Abuse Awareness Month and Autism Awareness Month. Susquehanna Valley CASA of which my good friend and not too distant neighbor, Yvonne Heatley is director. She has informed me that on Friday, April 22 there will be a brief ceremony at 1 p.m. in front of the Lycoming County Courthouse in downtown Williamsport to make a public declaration for recognizing child abuse.

Last Sunday was Autism Awareness Day and we wore blue all day. The symbolic puzzle piece reflects the mystery and complexity of ASD and all of the children affected by it are so special. I pray the public schools don’t lose their funding that helps take care of these special children, so more than ever, fundraising activities are needed through the Autism Society to help “Light Up the Blue.”
