Going to Disney

By Staff | Feb 21, 2019

MUNCY – The Muncy Jr. and Senior High School band and chorus under the direction of Mike Buck are going to Disney, as they are busy rehearsing a spring concert in preparation.

The music program has grown immensely over the past four years under the direction of Buck according to principal Tim Welliver. Initially the program had five band members and six choral students. Now there are 62 marching band members, 54 concert band participants, 19 in the jazz band, and 45 chorus members.

“That’s almost a 200 percent growth rate.” A team effort with school staff, parents and students made it possible to allow flexibility for classes, rehearsals, and lessons that were offered both in school, after school and evenings. Choices for participation in jazz, marching band, concert bands, choral and acapella groups were offered with a variety of musical genres.

Besides general music classes and band and chorus rehearsals, Buck also teaches a music technology class. He gives praise for their participation and incorporates little music history lessons into his rehearsals, such as a quick tale of Georges Bizet, a 19th century French composer as they play from the opera “Carmen.”

“Disney is possible because of our great Muncy Music Association,” Buck said. A trip to Disney World is possible due to fundraising efforts and donations. A recent purchase is a music trailer which they are anticipating for the trip, and thanks to the efforts of the Association. “They help in so many ways,” he added. The Association is made up of parents and other supportive community members who are very dedicated to the music program. Buck especially noted Sherrie Doebler, Katie McGuire, Amanda Hogan, Makaela Brown and Jessica Kerstetter.

The spring concert is set for mid March and includes performing members in grades fourth through 12.
