Fun Fact For The Week: The “Dog Days” of summer is the period of time when the star Sirius, known as the “Dog Star” rises with the sun when summer is at its hottest. Traditionally these days are from July 3 through August 11.

Pet Peeve For The Week: “Like”, when people are “like” talking, “ya know”, and they “like” say “ya know” all the time and use the word “like” all the time. “Like” that really bugs me, “ya know”.

Hughesville events

The Sons of American Legion Sonestown Squadron 602 will be hosting a Horseshoe Tournament on Sunday, July 11 and Sunday, August 8 at the Sonestown American Legion. Sign-up time is noon-1 p.m. and the start time is 1:15 p.m.

The Hughesville Glen Sharrow American Legion Post 35 Ladies Auxiliary monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m. in the first floor meeting room on the second Monday of every month. All members and prospective members are welcome.

Hughesville Boys Basketball Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, July 16 at the Wynding Brook Golf Club in Milton. Registration is 12 noon with a 1 p.m. start. The format is a two-person scramble.

The summer season for the Eagles Mere Friends of the Arts begins their new season with the Fourth of July concert on the Village Green featuring the Repasz Band.

On July 8, Brain/Food, a potluck dinner followed by a film or discussion with an artist will be held at the DeWire Center.

On Saturday, July 10, (not the 20th as previously listed) Derf Nolde, Dan Levinson and the Keystone Jazz Group will raise the roof at the DeWire Center. The festivities begin at 8 p.m. It promises to be a night of jazz you don’t want to miss.

On Sunday, July 11, the incredibly talented Philadelphia Trio will be performing at 8 p.m. in another extraordinary evening of chamber music.

The Lycoming CountyFair is just around the corner! The dates are July 15-24. For more information on the entry requirements, obtain a Lycoming County Fair Premium book at 1 East Park St. in Hughesville or contact Karen Yaw, secretary at 584-2196. Gate tickets for the fair are available until July 10 at Lowe’s Supermarket and Weis Markets in Muncy.

The Eagles Mere Civic Club will host their annual Flower Show on Wednesday, July 21 from 5-8 p.m. at the Community hall on Laporte Avenue. This year’s theme is “The Artist’s Studio”. Don’t forget this Sunday is the Fourthof July. Remember to show your patriotism and to be careful when using fireworks!
