The last ‘belling’ I attended took place probably around 1975. My friend’s brother had gotten married and I went with my mom and dad and the whole Hughesville RD2 neighborhood to welcome the newlyweds back home. We approached their home quietly, carefully carrying our cowbells, buckets, and pots. Someone whistled and a cacophony of noise suddenly invaded the couple’s quiet evening. Pots were banged, bells were rung, shotguns were fired, and hoots and hollers prompted the couple to open their front door and greet the crowd.
At the end of the Radio Corral Tribute last Saturday, the family surprised newlyweds Todd and Deana (McNett) Burke with a mini-belling. Some old traditions are just too much fun to let them disappear.
