Fun Fact For The Week: Jack-O-Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain (end of summer) holiday. I knew turnips were good for something!

Hughesville events:

A Flu Shot Clinic will be held at Wolf Run Village on October 27 starting at 9 a.m. in the living room. Medicare patients will be free.

Hughesville Little Spartan Wrestling Club and Cheerleading sign-ups will take place on Wednesday, October 27 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Ashkar Elementary School for Grades 1-6. The cost is $25 each participant or $40 per family. New wrestlers must have a copy of their birth certificate.

Trinity Lutheran Church in Hughesville will be having their annual Shoo Fly Pie Bake Sale on October 30 from noon-2:30 p.m. 8″ pies are $7.00. To order please call 584-5275 or 584-3490.

The Hughesville Halloween Parade will take place on Saturday, October 30. All walkers and floats are welcome. The parade will form at 5 p.m. at the Hughesville High School parking lot and end at the Fire Department. Cider and donuts will be served after the parade. Trick or Treat will be held from 6-8 p.m. Participants should turn on their porch lights.

Picture Rocks borough will observe Halloween Trick or Treating on Saturday, October 30 from 6-8 p.m.

The Pine Summit Methodist Church off Rte. 42 5 miles west of Millville will be holding their annual Roast Chicken Supper, family style on Saturday, October 30 from 3-7 p.m.

East Lycoming Democratic Campaign Volunteers will meet every Wednesday at 6 P.M. and every Saturday at 1:00 P.M. during the month of October, to phone-bank and canvass from the home of Dennis and Lois Sites, 346 West Cemetery Street, Hughesville. The Farragut United Methodist Church hosts its monthly First Tuesday Fellowship Dinner on November 2 from 5:30 -7 p.m. Free-will donations are accepted. The church is located on Rte. 864 near the intersection with Rte. 87.

The 15thannual St. Nick’s Novelties Craft Show will be held on Saturday, November 6 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Hughesville High School. There will be over 100 vendors, raffles and cafeteria style lunch served.

A blue grass concert featuring the Greenwood Valley Boys will be held on Sunday, November 7 at 2 p.m. at Tivoli United Methodist Church located 3 miles north of Picture Rocks on Rte. 220. A free will offering will benefit the United Methodist Children’s Home at Mechanicsburg.

The Clarkstown-Lairdsville Lutheran Parish will hold a supper and live auction at the Clarkstown Fire Hall on Saturday, November 6, starting at 4:00 P.M. The supper will feature pork and turkey, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, California blend and home grown corn and cake. The live auction will start at 7:00 PM until all is sold. A highlight of the auction will be a ticket drawing of five prizes featuring a hand-made queen size quilt. This drawing will be at 8:00 PM. Doors open for viewing auction items at 3:00 PM. This is a project of the Parish Evangelism committee. Half of the profit stays in the Parish and half will be given to local and world hunger. Watch for sale flyers and please come and support this and world hunger.

The next meeting of the Hughesville Area Friends of the library will be November 8 at 7 p.m.
