Fun Fact For The Week: According to the National Hurricane Center, if a storm’s peak winds become greater than 39 mph it becomes a tropical storm, and gets a real name, such as Irene or Lee. If it reaches over 74 mph then it becomes an official hurricane.

Pet Peeve For The Week: 108 Days until Christmas.

Congratulations to Coach Andy Brown on his first official win with the Hughesville Spartans Varsity Football Team! It was a nail biter of a game, with Greta Newhart kicking the winning field goal in overtime. The team did a terrific job and we look forward to watching them again on Friday, September 9, when the Spartans will travel to Troy.

Congratulations to those athleteswho have been selected to be inducted into the East Lycoming Athletic Hall of Fame for 2011. This year’s inductees are Paul McCoy, Bart Clementoni and Leslie (Clementoni) Lordi, plus Sean Thomas, will be inducted posthumously. These outstanding athletes will be inducted during half-time of the Spartan Varsity Football game taking place on September 30.

Hughesville events

The 39+ club will meet on Wednesday, September 7 at the Trinity Lutheran Social Hall. Mr. Robert Webster will be the guest speaker. Lunch will be around 11:45 a.m. Please bring a dish to share. New members are always welcome.

There are still many programs taking place at the Hughesville Public Library. Preschool Story Hour will take place on Friday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m; an Adult Program on Herbs-by Master Gardener Helen Grosso will be held on Saturday, September 10 at 2 p.m. This program will cover a little on getting started, harvesting, preserving and preparing oils, butters, sugars, etc.; Please call ahead to register so that enough materials are available.

Sat. Sept 10 there will be a yoga retreat for ages 11 and up at Lime Bluff Park from 9 a.m. to noon. Preregistration required by calling 546-8822.

The Friends of the Hughesville Public Library are starting their 2011-2012 meeting schedule on Monday, September 12 at 7 p.m. Meetings take place the second Monday of most months at 7 p.m. in the Library’s Community room. The Friends support the Library financially from the Book Room sales, plus they also provide help on projects to enhance the programs which the Library offers. An All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast will be held on Sunday, September 11 at the Picture Rocks Volunteer Fire Company from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A Memorial Service honoring those at rest in the Webster Cemetery will be held on Sunday, September 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the Huntersville United Methodist Church on Rabbittown Road. As well as a regular service, a special potion will focus on the Civil War veterans interred in the cemetery. A light luncheon provided by the church will follow.

This Sunday, September 11, our country will remember one of the greatest tragedies which ever took place on American soil. Ten years ago our country was viciously attacked by terrorists. There are many memorial and church services taking place. Remember to honor those innocent individuals who lost their lives on that tragic day.

Huntersville Area Senior Citizens will meet on Wednesday, September 14 at 6 p.m. at Huntersville United Methodist Church for a spaghetti dinner and meeting. A slight fee will be charged. New members are always welcome.

Rotary Festival 2011 will be held at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds on Saturday September 17 and Sunday, September 18. This is the sixth Festival Event sponsored by the Rotary clubs of Lycoming County. This Festival will be offering entertainment for the whole family. The event is planned and hosted by a group of dedicated volunteers who exemplify the Rotary motto: “Service Above Self”. This year’s event will benefit the Children’s Development Center.

Sons of the American Legion Sonestown Squadron 601 will be hosting a Clam Bake on Saturday, September 17, from 2-5:30 p.m.

The Jessica Ann Hicks Foundation will hold their annual Bike Road Race and Family Fun Day Festival on Saturday, September 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Van Rensselar Park in Picture Rocks.
