5 K races to be held in Tri-town area

By Staff | Oct 18, 2011

Two 5K Run/Walks are scheduled this month in the tri-town area to raise proceeds to benefit education and overseas missions.

The Muncy Elementary Organization of Parents and Teachers will host their first Annual Monster Dash 5K Run/Walk and Kids’ Fun Run on Saturday, October 22. The start and finish lines will be at Ward L. Myers Elementary school starting at 9 a.m. and participants will make their way through the historic town of Muncy. To view a course map and to register go to www.muncysd.org. Sign up can also be done the morning of the race from 7 to 8:30 a.m.

Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in 7 different age groups. For ages 12 and under, there will be a one mile Kids Fun Run starting at 10 a.m. beginning with the older children first.

Costumed runners are gladly welcomed as long as they are kid friendly and do not inhibit running ability. Teams are also welcome.

All proceeds will benefit numerous education programs, activities and supplies needed throughout the school year.

Another 5K race in the works is the third annual Great Commission 5K Run/Walk sponsored by the Hughesville Friends Church. The race will be held on Saturday, October 29 and will begin and finish at the Friends Church, 137 S. Third Street in Hughesville starting at 10 a.m. Registration will begin at 9 a.m.

The course is only 3.1 miles and is fast, flat, and well paved according to the organizers. T-shirts will be handed out to the first 50 who register. Pre-registrations will be accepted by contacting the church or visiting their website at www.hughesvillefriends.org.

All proceeds will benefit overseas missions.

Making Strides Run works toward less Breast Cancer and More Birthdays

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer celebrates its second year of celebrating breast cancer survivors, remembering those lost, and raising money to fight the disease that has touched so many near Lycoming County

Lycoming’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a five-K, non-competitive walk that will take place at Indian Park in Montoursville on October 29. Proceeds from Making Strides Against Breast Cancer support the American Cancer Society’s life-saving breast cancer research, education, advocacy, patient services, and community partnership grants for women in Lycoming County.

“We want everyone to realize that hope starts here in Lycoming County, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a way to raise money for much-needed programs and services while creating more awareness and educating people about the disease. It’s also a fun time for everyone to just come out and spend a great morning together while walking for a good cause,” said Tessa Bieber, ACS Staff.

Sponsors for the event include: Heller’s Gas and Susquehanna Health. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. Opening ceremonies will begin at 10:30 with a High Heel Race and Kids Fun Run kicking off at 10:00.
