Hughesville locals
When planning a trip to the Lycoming County Fair, there is a certain strategy necessary if one is to arrive at the right spot on the midway at the right time. My husband, Barry, and I employed the Fifth Street gate strategy Friday night, since our arrival was at supper time. Thus we could get our hot sausage sandwich and a drink to enjoy while viewing the outdoor displays (including the spectacular sight of a CAMEL in Hughesville!) before entering the larger commercial building. After watching the riders and game players along the carnival area, I usually head for my favorite French fries. I was sorely disappointed to realize that Bowman’s stand is no longer to be found! Our final food stop was for ice cream to enjoy while finishing the loop and admiring the livestock. It was, all told, a great visit to the fair, but I do have some things to check out another day this week I hope you will “take in” all the fun and food at the Lycoming County Fair.
When you go to one, or more, of the evening events at the Fair, notice the friendly ushers in the Grandstand. As a gesture of appreciation to our very supportive community, members of the Hughesville High School Band volunteer to usher at each grandstand event. A big “Thank You!” to this great group of teenagers!
Last week’s windstorm made a lot of work for people cleaning up downed limbs and trees, and the sound of chain saws has been heard frequently. Many thanks to those borough employees and volunteers who cleared streets and alleyways so business-as-usual could proceed.
We recently received information about the Annual Flower Show produced by the Eagles Mere Civic Club, Inc. There are lots of categories for entries and the theme this year revolves around the number Twelve. The divisions are: Design, 12 Adult categories; Young People’s Exhibits, 4 categories; and Horticulture, divided into container-grown entries and cut flowers. For more information you may contact the Flower Show Chair at 525-3345. Programs are available in Eagles Mere. It promises to be an entertaining and fragrant Wednesday evening!
Also in Eagles Mere, The Friends of the Arts summer season has begun. They have six evening performances between now and mid-August, ranging from music reminiscent of Frank Sinatra, to a dramatic performance by members of the Bloomsburg Theater Ensemble, to an evening of musical theater. Check their website for more info: www.EMFOA.org.
Until we get some significant rainfall, be extra careful with any fireworks or open flame of any sort! Dry grass will ignite quickly so be very cautious!
