The cooler weather is a benefit for all our student athletes. High school and junior league sports (such as AYSO and Pop Warner football) have begun, giving us opportunities to see or participate in a variety of events. Schedules for all the Hughesville High School teams are posted on the website www.homeofthespartans.com. If you need to know about anything that is happening in any of the district schools, you should become familiar with the district’s website, www.eastlycoming.net. I encourage everyone to check out these very informative sources.

Coming up this weekend are two annual fund-raising efforts featuring baked goods and lots of useful items for your family. The East Lycoming Historical Society Museum and Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church will both be busy places that will have something for everyone.

The weekend of September 14-16 will have a couple of major events: Lycoming County Rotary Clubs’ Balloonfest and Air Show at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds, and the Pennsylvania Bowhunters Festival at the Sullivan County Fairgrounds in Forksville. The sight and sound of dozens of hot-air balloons drifting above the valley, followed by the amazing aerobatic maneuvers during the air show are really spectacular. The Rotary Clubs have planned a full day of many different types of entertainment. There will be ATV Races, displays of hotrods, motorcycles, antique boats, and antique heavy equipment, food vendors, crafters and, weather permitting, tethered balloon rides. The Bowhunters Festival is always a great time with food, exhibits, competitions, and entertainment.

While it was a bit inconvenient to rearrange our routines to accommodate the paving crews over the last couple of weeks, the end result is a blessing. Several streets were resurfaced and will be much nicer to drive or cycle on. Plus, I’m sure it will make snowplowing more efficient when winter weather arrives.

Fri., Sept. 7, 8 – 4 & Sat., Sept. 8, 8 to noon, fundraiser with baked goods at Trinity Lutheran Church, South Main Street, Hughesville

Sat., Sept. 8 from 9 to 3, Membership drive and fundraiser with baked goods and old items to purchase at ELHS Museum, South Main Street, Hughesville.

Sat. Sept. 9 Bethany United Methodist Church on Second Street in Hughesville will be having Sunday School open house beginning at 10:15 a.m. Children will meet teachers, have a snack, visit with classmates, read a story, make a craft and play a game. Regular Sunday School classes will be held 10 to 11 a.m, every Sunday. Classes available for pre-school age up to adult.

Saturday Sept. 15, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. join the Lycoming County Rotary Clubs’ Balloonfest and Air Show at the Lycoming County Fairgrounds, Hughesville.

Friday through Sunday, Sept. 14-16 visit the PA Bowhunters Festival, Sullivan County Fairgrounds, Forksville.
