Old Immanuel Church Hymn Sing on Sunday
The annual Hymn Sing will be held on Sunday, September 16 at 2:30 p.m. at the Old Immanuel Lutheran Church. This church is believed to be the first church located in Lycoming County and is located in Muncy Creek Township. The deed was executed on April 5, 1791. However, there was a Lutheran minister on the grounds at least ten years earlier.
The present brick church is the third to be constructed on the site. The cornerstone was laid on August 28, 1869 and it was dedicated May 1, 1870. It cost $3480.25.
The first church built of logs held about six hundred persons, and had galleries on three sides and a “stem-glass” pulpit. There was also a school house, which at that time always went with the erection of a Lutheran church edifice.
The cemetery is the final resting place of both Revolutionary War and Civil War soldiers.
The public is invited to attend this annual hymn sing. Refreshments will be served afterward.
